Are weather radars accurate? ›

The data from weather national radars can be not very accurate due to interference. It can happen because the objects that reflect the radio beams are very small. 2. The requirements for the location of radars are very strict.

Weather surveillance radars such as the WSR-88D can detect most precipitation within approximately 80 nautical miles (nm) of the radar, and intense rain or snow within approximately 140 nm. However, light rain, light snow, or drizzle from shallow cloud weather systems are not necessarily detected.

Velocity data is derived from the phase, or doppler shift of the returned energy. The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds.

According to experts, as many as 10-20% of speeding tickets are issued in error because the radar didn't read your speed accurately. When the officer measures your speed from a moving police car, then the error rate jumps to as high as 30%.
